"Disclose the cost upfront." We tell businesses that all the time, so it’s important we follow our own advice. In that spirit, fees for telemarketers accessing the National Do Not Call Registry are going up a smidge as of October 1, 2013.
Under the law, telemarketers have to download numbers on the Do Not Call Registry to make sure they don’t call people who have said they want to be left alone. The first five area codes are free. Exempt groups, like some bona fide charities, can get the list at no charge.
But if your business is covered, for the next fiscal year — October 1, 2013, to September 30, 2014 — you’ll pay $59, an increase of $1 for access to Registry numbers in a single area code. That makes the maximum charge $16,228 for all area codes nationwide. Telemarketers will pay $1 more per area code for numbers they subscribe to receive during the second half of the 12-month period, for a total of $30 per area code. (By the way, the access fees are being increased as required by the Do-Not-Call Registry Fee Extension Act of 2007.)
Companies that pay their fees and abide by the rules get something else for their money: the thanks of millions of consumers who have placed their numbers on the Do Not Call Registry.
